The legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed more than 1,000 buildings in his career, including more than 500 single-family homes, many of which are still standing today. If you love his organic architecture style, you now have a chance to own one of his homes. Located in Jackson’s vibrant mid-century community of Fondren in Mississippi, Fountainhead is a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Usonian-style house. Wright designed the Fountainhead in 1948 when he was 81 years old. It is a rare example of his work in the area and reflects his unique approach to blending buildings with their natural surroundings.
As its name suggests, Fountainhead (also called the J. Willis Hughes House) has a fountain that flows into a swimming pool designed by Wright to look like “a pond in a woodland glade.” The site is about one acre of forested land at the corner of Glen Way and Woodland Drive.
Wright picked and approved the site before designing the house. The land slopes down from both streets, creating a small wooded valley for the structure.
This 3,558-square-foot Frank Lloyd Wright-designed house has three bedrooms, two full bathrooms, and two half bathrooms. Its design seamlessly blends into the site, which further guides its shape. Wright used a diamond-shaped (parallelogram) pattern, which is etched in the floors and affects the placement of walls, doors, and rooms.

The Fountainhead house was built without stud walls, sheetrock, brick, tile, or paint. Instead, it uses Heart Tidewater Red Cypress wood for both the walls and ceilings. The roof still features the original copper sheets. There are large windows to bring in lots of natural light and views, while the warm wood and built-in features create a simple and elegant feel.
Fountainhead was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 28, 1980. The property is peaceful but still close to Fondren’s shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions. The current owner, architect Robert P. Adams, is selling this house in Mississippi for $2.5 million through Crescent Sotheby’s International Realty.
