Originally launched in 1970 as the EC-127, this classic piece is now made from 99 percent recycled plastic for a greener design and features new color and upholstery options. For the first time, it is also available without upholstery, making it ideal for busy spaces like offices, libraries, dining rooms, and restaurants.
Charles and Ray Eames often improved their designs over time. For example, they made the back legs of the 1946 DCM chair longer to support sitting straighter for the DCM-L version for libraries. The EC-127 was its upholstered version made with reinforced plastic instead of plywood. The new plastic material created a shock-absorbing mount that was easier to make and more durable, and it was later used in many Eames plastic chairs. Today, the Eames Molded Plastic Dining Chair has an even stronger plastic frame and a curved seat for comfortable support during activities like eating, chatting, or reading.
The playful colors and upholstery options are inspired by the colors Charles and Ray Eames used for their prototype of “The Toy,” a colorful construction set for children. These colors are also available on the classic Eames Shell Chair, which has been in production since 1950.
The chair legs come in classic chrome, bright colors like blaze, marigold, and berry blue, or in black and white. For extra comfort, the chair can be covered with fabrics chosen by Maharam, including Alexander Girard’s Hopsak, which was an option when the chair was first made.
