IKEA has unveiled its new OMMJÄNGE collection, inspired by the 19th century Swedish folklore; a time when living in a small space was a practical necessity. Designed by Maria Vinka together with industrial designer Matilda Hunyadi, this playful and poetic collection brings old traditions into modern homes with a playful touch and bright colors. “Connecting to our heritage keeps us grounded in a fast-evolving world. OMMJÄNGE celebrates our history in a playful way,” Matilda expressed.
Combining Scandinavian craftsmanship with practical design, it shows that tradition can be fun and useful. Maria and Matilda explored how classic Swedish materials and silhouettes could be updated for today’s flexible homes.
When looking at lesser-known parts of the 19th century Swedish interiors, the designer discovered bold colors and patterns that can be brought back. She was also inspired by a colorful 1846 bride’s portrait, full of patterns and decorations.
As people are now getting more interested in downsizing and looking for new ways to feel comfortable, OMMJÄNGE offers a colorful and unique option instead of plain minimalism. It blends old and new styles, bringing together tradition, craft, and culture in a modern way. No matter where you live, OMMJÄNGE pieces are made to bring happiness, start conversations, and help you see the value in old traditions.
OMMJÄNGE collection brings Swedish heritage into today’s homes with practical and stylish pieces. There are poplar baskets made with old weaving techniques, a lamp shaped like a bridal dress, and a drop-leaf table inspired by a 200-year-old design but perfect for modern spaces. Even the wall hook, made using a traditional wire method, is a joyful creation. Each item is simple, space-saving, and designed for the changing needs of modern living.

The collection utilizes classic materials such as solid pinewood, wool, stoneware, and glass, which are chosen not only for their beauty but also for their durability. All the materials are tied together through a high level of craftsmanship.
The IKEA OMMJÄNGE collection was recently showcased at IKEA’s annual event, Democratic Design Days. This limited collection will be available in IKEA Canada stores and online starting early 2026.
