Who thought the same-old look of mini smart speakers couldn’t be changed? Tokyo-based Metal Goat Studio designed Kogani, a unique smart speaker holder that can update your old smart speaker into a sculptural piece. Resembling a stylized crab, it is an origami-inspired decorative piece that will help you add a unique touch to your old smart speaker. The object is designed to house compact smart speakers such as the Amazon Echo Dot or Google Nest Mini.
Installation is super simple: you need to put your smart speaker over it, and it gets a new look and form of a colorful crab. The magnetic design prevents the speaker from falling once placed on it. Two brass elements on the front give the feeling of the crab’s eyes.
Initially, the designer wanted to make it using brass sheets and wood, but later changed their mind due to the high material cost and the need for high cleanliness. Kogani is constructed from lightweight synthetic paper and acrylic, along with a few brass details. It uses origami-inspired folding techniques to create an intricate, lightweight, yet durable structure. With an emphasis on sustainability, the materials used are fully recyclable, making Kogani an eco-conscious addition to any modern home.
Kogani also functions as a striking design element on its own, whether you put it on a shelf, desk, or as a conversation-starting décor piece. Each piece is hand-assembled and can be customized in color, claw shape, and even patterns to make every piece one-of-a-kind.
The design is capsular, making it a fancy fit for any environment, and comes with customizations of colour and pattern. Each crab owns its own identity with its own design, name, and even place in a blockchain as a non-tradeable NFT to prove its authenticity.

It is part of the Capsule Animals series emerged during the pandemic to cope with loneliness. This minimalist origami style of interior elements resembles living beings with integration to aspects of smart design and smart home. It uses its appearance to add identity to any small speaker, highlighting the feeling of addressing and listening to something alive, or a pet.
Kogani is initially available via Patreon and Ko-fi at the price of $40. The basic color is white, and any custom color (red, black, yellow, blue, pink, purple, etc.) can be set up as an add-on. You can also ask for other customizations, including pattern film onthe body and legs, as well as any other preferences.
