Harvest Moon, a Swedish bathroom brand, has launched Luna, a waterless toilet that helps turn waste into soil and fertilizer. Luna composting toilet was showcased at the Stockholm Furniture Fair 2024. It is a stylish and comfortable toilet that apart from guaranteeing great hygiene, ensures eco-friendly disposal of human waste. The development of Luna took five years and both eco-friendly credentials and user experience were considered during its creation.

Luna smell-free toilet challenges the norms of a water-based sanitation system that has been in existence for a long time. This water-free toilet impresses with its looks, is easy to use and install, as it doesn’t require a person to come in contact with the excreta at any stage.

Unlike traditional toilets, Luna creates a way to save both energy and water. According to research, in an average American home, as much as 27 percent of household water goes into toilets amounting to almost 50,000 liters every year. With Luna composting toilet, users have a chance to save such a large amount of the natural resource and lead a sustainable life.

Luna makes use of a system that separates urine and feces into different sections. It uses an integrated pump thus saving users from manually emptying the containers. Also, there is no need to install an underground collection tank. The urine can be channelized to a fertilizer storage tank and if allowed by local regulations, it can be diverted to a ground infiltration system. In case these two alternatives are not possible, it can even be pumped directly to the sewer. Alternatively, feces are collected in a black bin that contains a compostable plastic bag.

Harvest Moon states that human waste must be left to decompose for about a year post which it can be mixed into the soil. The Luna composting toilet uses electronic functions like a sliding cover that keeps the feces covered at all times. A fan ensures air movement, while a rotating bin helps in decomposition.

These systems can be powered with solar energy thus Luna can be used off-grid. The company also extends some accessories to maximize user experience such as a black biochar compost, carbon cover, and liquid urine mixer. These can help in reducing the smell.

Luna is offered in a range of colors and material finishes thus allowing variety to users. With Luna composting toilet, Harvest Moon wishes to tap the evolving market of water-free toilets. Interested buyers can pre-order this regenerative composting toilet from the company’s website.
