Mammoth Overland is one of the few trailer manufacturers we have been keeping a close eye on since its inception. The reason is that its rugged, high-end, aerospace-inspired camper trailers are hard to ignore. On the pretext of Overland Expo West, the Washington-based trailer manufacturing company has graced us with yet another creation dubbed the SKL (Skull) rooftop camper.
Unveiled as a prototype, this compact yet feature-packed shelter is designed to redefine overlanding by combining durability, comfort, and off-grid capability. The maker touts SKL to be the “most rugged trailer in its league.”
We can testify to this claim once we know the exact weight of the camper. But what we do know for now is that the rooftop camper boasts aluminium composite construction, a durable powder-coated finish, coupled with R5 insulation rating, which ensures the SKL can withstand the harshest weather conditions.
As reported by Off Road Xtreme, the SKL rooftop camper measures 89 inches long, 59 inches wide, and a sleek 18 inches tall when closed, making it one of the most compact rooftop shelters in its class. Despite its low profile, the SKL offers a spacious interior that comfortably sleeps two adults, with a sleeping area of 82 inches by 53 inches.
When deployed, the camper expands to a height of 53 inches, providing ample headroom for a cozy yet functional living space. It’s unclear at the moment whether the makers have opted for electric actuators or are relying on a gas strut-assisted pop-up mechanism.
Another important feature that Gear Junkie has highlighted is the ‘origami-style fold-out solid walls’ of the camper, which makes it quite evident why Mammoth Overland wanted to bill its latest model as a rooftop camper and not a rooftop tent (RTT). Other features that the camper boasts are dimmable LED lighting, both inside and out, ensuring visibility during nighttime setups or late-night camp activities.

Ventilation is a key focus of the SKL’s design. The camper includes three porthole windows to promote airflow, keeping the interior fresh even in humid or warm climates. The SKL has a solar-ready power system, designed to support off-grid exploration. The camper comes equipped with classic Mammoth staples such as a battery bank (two solid-state Renogy 104Ah lithium-ion packs) that powers an electric fan and LED lights.
SKL also features a roof rack ready to accommodate 500 lbs. of essentials when you hit the trails. Other features are under wraps at the moment, and we are looking forward to a detailed press release from the maker to update those. While the SKL rooftop camper doesn’t have the tech nuances of Tall Boy and ELE, the camper looks rugged, despite the fact that it’s mounted above a vehicle.
