The ’70s in Italian design were marked by bold colors and intriguing geometries. A case in point is the Pallino table lamp by Martinelli Luce, which exhibits both and thus has stood the test of time. Bringing back Italian retro-futurism with functional minimalism, the brand has decided to reintroduce the lamp to celebrate its ‘restrained simplicity’ and compact form at the 2026 Salone del Mobile. Designed as a small architectural object for tables or desks, the Pallino lamp combines a slender curved base and a spherical reflector.

“Reintroducing Pallino means bringing back into today’s homes a touch of the formal lightness and chromatic boldness that made Italian design great. It means choosing an object with a story to tell, one that still looks ahead together with those who own it”, says Emiliana Martinelli, President of Martinelli Luce.

The word ‘Pallino’ means a little ball in Italian, and that’s exactly what the light implies. It is a toy-like desk companion that acts as a reductive object while stripping away everything until the ‘purity of the circle and the line’ are the only remains. The small table architecture takes the center stage today while being faithful to its original design, yet ready to fit into the future interiors.

The spherical reflector is attached to the body via a joint that allows it to swivel. Therefore, you can rotate and tilt the head of the lamp to point the light exactly where you need it, whether directly onto a book or angled towards a wall for ambiance. The lamp doesn’t dictate where the light goes; it invites the user to move it according to needs, representing the philosophy of user agency.

The design remains loyal to the original idea while featuring the same simplicity in its proportions. It measures 240 mm in height with a base diameter of 80 mm and a 250 mm sphere.

Compact in its size, the Pallino lamp uses the 1970s famous ABS plastic for the base and stamped aluminum for the sphere. Available in a variety of bold and saturated colors, the liquid-painted finish enhances the materiality, giving it a chic look.

Reconnecting the modern lights with the early Italian aesthetic, the brand shows how a simple yet classic design can remain relevant even after ages. The lamp speaks for the era that it belongs to with the color scheme, while the lamp’s visual lightness forms an approachable character with a playful identity.
