The ‘100 Lights’ exhibition at Melbourne Design Week not only celebrates lighting as a typology but also opens the doors to creatives from broad design backgrounds to experiment and showcase their vision. This year, many exhibitors focused on sustainable, experimental, and traditional manufacturing techniques, including Sydney-based designer Patryk Koca, who will showcase a unique lamp celebrating Bronze casting. The new Reverie lamp impresses not only with its shiny surface but also stands out with the patterned illumination it offers.

Bronze casting is an energy-intensive process, but the material is pure and noble and does not require coating or treatments that are often the most harmful to the environment. Recognizing and celebrating the value of the core material creates a sense of attachment and adds longevity to a product. You may have seen several bronze lamps, but most of them are for bases and decorative elements. Patryk has gone a step forward by making the entire lamp structure from bronze.

Cast in bronze, the outer body of the lamp features a solid, heavy form with eye-catching elliptical openings. When illuminated, a soft glow shines through the portholes while also cleverly hiding the battery-powered light source above. The porous cast surface proudly displays its natural imperfections, while the bronze adds a warm hue to enhance the quality of the reflected light.

At first glance, the Reverie looks like a decorative vase, but its true function is revealed when switched on. Light escapes through the portholes in its body, transforming it into a striking sculptural lamp.

When asked about the design, Patryk shared with Homecrux, “100 lights gave me a nudge to try something different to furniture, to challenge myself with new yet ancient manufacturing techniques, build new relationships and explore the role of technology to achieve an unconventional but practical product.”

The beautiful shape, color, and materiality are what define the main concept of the Reverie cast bronze lamp. It explores bronze textures harmoniously infused with forms inspired by ancient archetypes of columns and arches. designs blend practicality with high-quality artistry.
