Rolls-Royce cars are loved worldwide for their automotive brilliance, but what if they created a chess set? Making the idea a reality, the luxury carmaker has launched a one-of-a-kind chess set inspired by its iconic cars. It captures a sense of movement and elegance with sculptural lines, leather-lined compartments, and a magnetic board.
The Chess Set features a leather-clad base, curved upward at both ends to mimic the waft lines of the Rolls-Royce motor cars. Its sculpted form gives the illusion of floating on its narrow footprint. Just a slight pull and the top opens like a stage, unveiling a leather-lined compartment that holds the magnetized pieces. This sliding movement mirrors the iconic coach doors of a Rolls-Royce.
There are hidden magnets beneath the playing surface to ensure the pieces stay stable during play. The design team experimented with six different types of magnets to choose the one that has enough strength to secure the pieces yet allow them to be moved across the board effortlessly. As an additional feature, the board has discreet drawers on each side, opened with a light touch. It contains an additional queen to take the place of a piece that has been promoted during the game.
Both the generously sized board and the chess piece holder are framed with polished aluminum edges. A polished aluminum Spirit of Ecstasy emblem is discreetly affixed to the front and back of the Chess Set to signify its origin.
Each set is made from laser-cut veneer squares that are carefully placed by hand. Each piece comes from the same log to ensure a consistent natural grain pattern on the board. The aluminum grid is machine-milled and hand-finished to sharpen the corners.
The chess pieces featuring faceted surfaces are made of ceramic-coated aluminum. The designers studied traditional chess pieces and settled on extending them downward into square bases. Each piece has a built-in magnet and is crowned with a jewel-like polished stainless-steel head for a sculptural look. The black chess pieces feature a satin finish, while the white pieces sport a subtle iridescent finish. The weight and cool feel of the pieces is somewhat similar to the solid-metal organ stops in Rolls-Royce cars.

The chess set features an opening design for a theatrical allure while the fine materials, hand-fitted veneer, and polished details reflect Rolls-Royce craftsmanship. Handcrafted using the marquee’s signature materials and techniques, the chess set can be personalized in a number of ways.
The playing board comes in four veneer combinations, each making a diamond pattern when viewed from above. The grain around the playing surface is longitudinal, while the veneer within the playing field has a 45-degree angle for contrast. The exterior and piece holder can also be personalized using one of 13 Rolls-Royce leather colors.
