Manu and Jakob from Germany have developed the world’s first fusion tent that combines the spaciousness of a soft-shell tent with the robustness of a hard-shell one. Christened as Roof Space 2, this rooftop tent is also the German Design Award Winner for 2024. The creators present it to outdoor enthusiasts as a product that has been thoughtfully made by experienced rooftop campers themselves for people who love the idea of sleeping on the rooftop.
The hard shell case made using premium aluminum and steel materials has a length of 62 inches, a width of 54 inches, and a height of 10 inches. Featuring an 800lb dynamic load rating, the accessory can easily accommodate roof racks, bikes, kayaks, and other stuff on its top in the locked position. Once opened it extends the benefits of the soft-shell tent with interiors measuring 98 inches long, 59 inches wide, and 51 inches high. With swift transitions, setting up and closing the Roof Space 2 rooftop tent is pretty easy, a boon for solo travelers.

The Roof Space 2 can achieve great stability with the help of an integrated redundant stability system that is an innovation for rooftop tents. This steel cable system is backed by powerful internal gas struts that make it an easy job to open and close the tent, requiring only 6 pounds of force. It also has custom-made zippers that are better than traditional metal zippers. For accidents, wear and tear, the makers have kept user-friendly repairs in mind.
Additionally, there is a ventilation system integrated on all four sides of the tent that can be used to pipe in a heater or A/C, if required. The natural ventilation system of the tent works perfectly, thanks to 320 g/m² polyester ripstop fabric which is highly breathable and durable at the same time.
To make way for storage, Roof Space 2 rooftop tent has space for keeping camping items like blankets, sleeping bags, and pillows when closed. There are add-ons available for this tent which include an awning, light base annex, family base annex, mosquito net, L-tracks for mounting accessories like solar panels, mountain bikes, and cargo boxes, to the top of the aluminum case. The Roof Space 2 comes at a price tag of $2,399 for early pledgers.
