British lighting production house Mathmos has garnered recognition for its iconic lava lamps ever since its foundation in 1963. The way the lava moves within the lamp provides a hypnotic visual and sensory stimulation. Mathmos recently collaborated with Dutch designer Sabine Marcelis to reinterpret the iconic Astro Lava Lamp into a new collection. It includes a giant Column Lava Lamp and a small lava lamp.
The designer transformed the iconic lava lamp into a giant column. Standing at 9.7 feet tall (three meters), this architectural light looks like a sculpture. The bottle of lava lamp is made from hand-finished frosted borosilicate glass. The Column Lava Lamp has an aluminum base, a plastic top with a white matte finish, and the transparent container is placed in the middle to illuminate your space.
The lava comes in three different shades: soft bubblegum, peach, and honeydew. The soft light is radiated from a 150W linear halogen capsule bulb. The frosted glass cylinders are hand-blown and filled in the Mathmos UK factory.
The best thing about the Column Lava Lamp is that you can shorten its height if required. The light glow is soft and feels relaxing while the slow-moving lava blobs create a mesmerizing display. Just by looking at the lava, it makes you happy, a reason that makes lava lamps more popular compared to simple lamps.
Mathmos and Marcelis are also bringing back the original Astro Lava Lamp, first designed by British inventor Edward Craven Walker in 1963. This limited-edition reinvention, with only 1,000 pieces, measures 1.41 feet high and 0.49 feet wide. The glass container comes with an original hand-finished frosted coating with honeydew colored aluminum base and top.

Both of these lamps are filled with a special long-lasting formula made by the company that gives them a smooth flow. The design of these lamps has a minimalistic touch, making them a good option for a night light thanks to their calming qualities and soothing gleam.
Sabine Marcelis has worked with Mathmos before. She designed the 60th anniversary lava lamp for the company in 2023, and a Plum Lava Lamp, launched in 2024. This new collection will be available on the Mathos website. The price of the giant Column lava lamp is £8,500 ($11,300), while the Astro lava lamp is priced at £170 ($220).
