Audiophiles have long admired Dolby Atmos as spatial audio technology for an immersive sound experience. A new player is entering the market to create a healthy competition. The consumer electronics giant Samsung is ready to take on the existing 3D audio format with its latest Eclipsa Audio – a royalty-free 3D audio technology developed in partnership with Google. The company will integrate the new audio technology into its 2025 TV and soundbar lineup.

First announced in 2023, Eclipsa Audio allows creators to adjust audio data such as the location and intensity of sounds and spatial reflections to create an immersive three-dimensional sound experience. Samsung and Google are working with Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA) to create a certification program for devices using Eclipsa Audio to ensure consistent sound quality.

As highlighted by TechRadar, this spatial audio technology is royalty-free and open source, enabling others to use and modify it as per different needs. Currently, the format is new and most streaming platforms have to adopt it. For now, YouTube supports it in fraction, but that is said to increase with creators having the option to upload content in Eclipsa Audio format to YouTube in 2025.

Samsung and Google will be showcase the potential of the new spatial audio tech at CES 2025. For now, you will be able to experience the audio format only in Samsung’s 2025 TV lineup including the Crystal UHD series and the Neo QLED 8K models.
