Being a Greek mythology enthusiast myself, I never imagined someone immortalizing one of my favorite Greek tales into a timeless piece of furniture. I am talking about the steel chairs inspired by the sea monsters Scylla and Charybdis. These hideous ogres are considered to be the most ruthless sea creatures in Greek mythology and even Poseidon feared one. The eponymous Scylla and Charybdis steel chairs will make your jaw drop with their sparkle and monstrous anatomy.

Scylla and Charybdis steel chairs are designed by Athens-based ASTRONAUTS and SERAPIS. The former is a creative studio, while the latter is a hybrid, art, design, and fashion collective. The two collectives teamed up and brought their respective creative visions to craft these sea monsters-inspired chairs.

The steel chairs’ fascinating construction involves legs forged from steel and an upholstered seat in jacquard-woven Greek cotton fabric. The pointed tips of the legs make Scylla and Charybdis seem to be hovering, resembling the menacing figures of the ancient creatures.

But what is intriguing to me is the design concept realized by ASTRONAUTS and SERAPIS. One designs and crafts the chair by molding thin sheets of steel using the hydroforming technique, while the other uses its modified rust-textured upholstery and lustrous metallic hue for the chairs.

For the final touches, the chairs are coated with custom translucent powder that allows the heat blemish from the welding process to come to the surface, lending the furniture with natural tone and texture. The designers illustrate the magic of Greek mythology in these exotic Scylla and Charybdis steel chairs and I am sure these chairs will enchant all the mythology lovers out there.
