Marcus-Bello from the Lagos-based nmbello Studio is one audacious mind in the design industry, whose philosophy is based on seeing an already existing material with a fresh perspective. His latest creation dubbed Selah Lamp 2.0 is a refreshing rendition of his previous Selah Lamp 1.0 in collaboration with the Madrid-based fabricator Caliper. The first version was a bit unassuming and functional, and the second version hasn’t changed much either, except for the perspective of the design. This lamp just like its predecessor is multifunctional, and doubles as a bookshelf.

The Selah Lamp 2.0 is manufactured from galvanized steel with a hand-finished patina. Meanwhile, the lampshade is made from solid surface material Corian, integrated with a diffused LED bulb, more dimmable than the previous one that has been authenticated and certified. The natural material showcases the durability and quality of the lamp.

Both versions are similar in utility, form, and structure, but differ in approach. This version shares a more enhanced approach. It not only provides seamless functionality by doubling as a bookshelf. By rendering a sleek design, it can fit into an easily approachable space, for example near the sofa in a living room, or adjacent to the work desk in a bedroom.

Boasting a multifunctional and industrial design (raw and unrefined) the lamp underlines the value of natural material. The idea of retaining the raw look is to make people see and appreciate the making process.

Interestingly, the Selah Lamp 2.0 is portable and follows an assembly approach. It is flat-packed and can be carried from one space to another without a fuss, you just have to reassemble it in a new space with an Allen key. With this mindful collaboration, the designers were able to infuse an already existing product with more refined sensibilities.

It is amazing when a product does more than its inherent use, and provides the user with the opportunity to use it in more than one way. We can also call it the work of a fearless mind that is adamant about breaking the boundaries of traditional product making and its function. The lamp is a limited edition product with only 25 pieces available worldwide.
