If you enjoy camping but prioritize comfort and safety, a rooftop tent (RTT) is the perfect setup for you. Unlike traditional tents that demand extensive effort to set up, RTTs can be deployed in about a minute. They also offer stunning views of the surroundings and an added layer of security, features hard enough for a traditional tent to match. These advantages are fueling the RTT boom in the US. Cashing in on the trend is Wild Land, a Chinese gear company that has launched an impressive new RTT dubbed Sky Rover.

The automatic hardshell rooftop tent combines cutting-edge automation with thoughtful design. Akin to Stargazer Solo, the Sky Rover features a transparent roof for unparalleled stargazing. Besides the transparent polycarbonate roof, the RTT features a multi-window structure that offers 360-degree panoramic views to the campers. The tent’s hardshell is made from scratch-resistant polycarbonate that protects the tent during travel, whilst offering a sleek, streamlined look to the camping rig.

When closed, it measures a compact 68.6 x 56.3 x 12.6 inches, making it suitable for most 4×4 vehicles, from mid-size SUVs to full-size trucks and trailers. Once opened, the tent expands to a spacious 84.6 x 57.1 x 39.4 inches, comfortably accommodating 2-3 people. It is designed to bring the comforts of an RV to the top of your vehicle.

As a standard in the RTT industry, Sky Rover boasts an automated setup. The tent can be opened using a wireless remote control or a mobile phone app, and takes about 60 seconds to unfurl. This is possible courtesy of the tent’s electro-pneumatic scissor lift system that allows smooth opening of the tent. This hands-free setup implies a camper can focus on unloading gear or preparing a campfire while the tent takes shape. For those worried about power issues in remote locations, Wild Land includes a manual crank system as backup, ensuring you’re never stranded without shelter.

Now that we are done discussing the exterior, let’s jump to the interior of the tent. The tent’s interior is designed for both comfort and functionality. It includes a 41.5-inch high-density foam mattress with a skin-friendly thermal cover that ensures a restful night’s sleep. The tent’s diagonal X-shaped support frame enhances stability, while the fiberglass honeycomb base adds durability without excessive weight.

Another standout feature of the tent is its dual-wing expandable floor, which automatically folds out during setup to create a trapezoidal shape. This design maximizes interior space, giving you more room to stretch out or store gear. For privacy, the Sky Rover includes blackout shades for the transparent roof and three large side windows, allowing you to control light and visibility as needed.

The Sky Rover also offers some quirky perks that set it apart from competitors. As highlighted in a recent article on New Atlas, the tent includes a dining table and even a urinal. Combined, all these features bring a touch of RV-style convenience to the rooftop camping world. For those interested, the Sky Rover is available for $4,099, making it a worthwhile investment for serious adventurers.
