Japanese audio brand Technics has unveiled a brand new turntable at IFA 2025. Dubbed SL40CBT, the Technics’ latest turntable combines its famous direct drive technology with a modern design. Instead of using the traditional aluminum die-cast chassis, the turntable features a sleek and minimalist MDF wood design with a premium finish, which the brand says “offers warmth and brings harmony to any living space.” The turntable is available in three color options: light grey, charcoal, and terracotta.

As of technical features are concerned, SL-40CBT employs Technics’ proprietary direct-drive system, featuring an iron-coreless motor that ensures exceptional rotational stability and accuracy. In a nutshell, the turntable promises to deliver the rich, analog warmth that Technics is known for while embracing contemporary conveniences that make it a standout in the crowded turntable market.

On the design front, the SL-40CBT comes equipped with an S-shaped aluminum tonearm, which Technics says “ensures high tracking performance through micron-level precision engineering.” The tonearm is incorporated with Audio-Technica AT-VM95C cartridge, which, What Hi Fi notes, “is lauded for its sonic finesse and compatibility with most moving magnet phono stages, making it a versatile choice for a wide range of setups.”

The SL40CBT turntable is not just about appearance or tech; the Japanese audio manufacturer has added another novel feature to it. Aimed at today’s vinyl enthusiasts, Technics SL40CBT has built-in Bluetooth, allowing users to wirelessly play records through compatible Bluetooth speakers and headphones. As vinyl continues its resurgence, manufacturers are increasingly incorporating wireless capabilities to appeal to a broader audience, and Technics has followed suit without compromising its audiophile roots.

Another highlight of the turntable is the built-in switchable phono stage. Much like the SL-1500C, which has been praised for its high-quality integrated phono stage, the SL-40CBT allows users to connect directly to a variety of hi-fi systems or active speakers without the need for an external preamp. This makes it an excellent choice for newcomers to vinyl who may not yet have a dedicated phono stage.

Opposed to its high-end models, Technics is selling SL-40CBT turntable for an accessible price point of $900. Besides SL-40CBT, Technics also showcased the SL-50C model at IFA, available in the same three color options.
