Apartment living is on the high and one thing at a premium is the available floor space. The rising cost of living in urban areas has led to the trend of space-saving furniture, which aligns perfectly with the demands of studios, one-bedroom spaces, and micro-apartments where every square foot counts. Motorized, app-controlled furniture that shifts configurations throughout the day is an emerging category. A room can function as a home office in the morning and a bedroom at night with minimal effort.
Croatian designer Luka Buljan wants to push the envelope of space-saving furniture design further with a single queen bed design that rolls into a side cabinet configuration at the push of a button. Superseding ideas like the sleeper sofa, which don’t hold much relevance in modern times, an inflatable mattress, which can be a real hassle to put together, or the good-ol’ Murphy beds that take up your wall space, the Roll mattress bed is both hassle-free and highly practical for small spaces.
The idea for a rollable mattress bed took more than a year to materialize after building initial prototypes that built on the idea of rollable mattresses. Result? Well, a full-sized single bed that, when not in use, sits pretty as a wooden cabinet with diffused LED lighting to maintain the aesthetic appeal. Just push a button, and it rolls out in 30 seconds, ready for a sound slumber during the nighttime.
A lot of thought has been put into the bed design and the mattress, which has to endure repeated rolling and unrolling. Luka tested the setup for a year, testing with multiple materials. The 5-year warranty speaks a lot about his confidence in the product. The rollable mattress of the bed is made out of layered polyurethane foam that has a 4-inch base support layer for spinal alignment and a 2-inch pressure-releasing memory foam layer. These two layers are secured by the 400-gsm knit outer surface that maintains structural integrity over the years. The foam used has a high SAG, which means the mattress is highly supportive and comfortable to sleep on.
To ensure the mattress is highly breathable and moisture-resistant, the design has a carefully built fine-cell structure. The Roll bed’s cardboard roll-out frame is sturdy and stable for all use case scenarios, for reassuring comfort and durability. You can expect the thing to last at least 8-10 years, which is quite impressive.
This inventive idea is currently up on Kickstarter for crowdfunding, successfully achieving four times the goal. Mattress sizes will be available depending on the location. For instance, the queen-size mattress is 60×80 inches for the US, and 160×200 cm for the EU region. The Roll mattress bed will be available in six optional finishes, which should go well with any interiors. The queen mattress size bed can be pledged for $1,689, which is 31 percent off the MRSP, so you’d better hurry if you already love the idea.
