It is quite noticeable that speakers are evolving not only in terms of specifications and sound quality, but also in accepting new forms and materials for better aesthetics. We have previously seen IKEA experimenting with a mouse-shaped speaker for kids, and earlier Bang and Olufsen opted for marble to create its bespoke Balance Natura speaker that is a true work of art. On the same lines, Spotify, in collaboration with beverage company Liquid Death, has launched the world’s first-ever music-streaming urn.
The all-new Eternal Playlist Urn not only holds the ashes of your deceased family member but also doubles as a functional speaker. It doesn’t feature the standard boxy shape; rather, it conceals the speaker system in the urn lid. The company says, “With the Eternal Playlist Urn, now the dead can listen to their favorite jams for all of eternity.” It is meant to make death a lot less boring with the urn speaker, but that totally depends on your belief system.
Another noticeable thing is the speaker position on the inside of the lid that will mask the sound if placed on the urn, but should offer a louder sound owing to its hollow interiors. For optimum practical use though, you’ll have to place it on a table or level surface to get room-filling sound.
You can also create an eternal playlist on Spotify with the Eternal Playlist Generator. For this, you need to answer a few questions, like “What’s your eternal vibe?” or “What’s your go-to ghost noise?” Based on your answers and your Spotify listening history, it creates a personalized mix for a lifetime, or even after the lights go out.

The distinctive design brings together two different parallels, which makes the marketing campaign even more fruitful. The unusual form of the speaker carries a subtle meaning due to its relevance to the afterlife.
Measuring around 7 × 7 × 11 inches and weighing 2.4 pounds, the urn speaker seems like a weird concept, but it would make sense to those who believe in souls and the unseen. The main idea is attracting people through an unusual form, and Liquid Death has done the same earlier with their Yeti Casket cooler.
The Eternal Playlist Urn is a limited edition product, with only 150 available for purchase in the US for a price of $495. This portable speaker is definitely not for audiophiles, as it seems like a sentimental marketing gimmick to be honest.
