South Carolina-based Chay Denne known for his YouTube channel President Chay has captivated audiences over the web with challenging projects including school bus conversions. His latest creation is a camper van he claims to be the world’s smallest drivable camper. He and his brother have transformed a 1999 Subaru 4WD van bought from the Facebook marketplace into an off-grid mobile home.

The transformation starts with emptying the back of the van and adding a wooden floor instead. Due to the high position of the engine in the back, the wooden floor base leaves space underneath that has been utilized for storing the water tank and electricity system. The walls have been framed with wood slats which completes the main skeleton.

After foam insulation, the walls were painted white while the wood panels on the floor were covered with a black carpet fabric for a nice look inside. The makers have created a custom couch from two wood panels – connected by hinges – that can be turned into a bed at night. For the kitchen, they have made a custom cabinet that houses a microwave, fridge, and sink. There is also a tiled area in the rear, which can be used to accommodate an outdoor shower.

The main highlight of the van conversion is its off-grid capability. For this, the builders have added a complete electrical system with ceiling lights, plugs, two batteries of 220 amp hours, and 200W solar panels. The batteries are also wired to the van alternator to charge when it is running on the road.

Before making any additions, the van weighed about 2,380 lbs, and with all the modifications in the back, the van now weighs 2,900 lbs. It is quite an amazing van conversion because it looks small from the outside but has been equipped with the all possible facilities you would require for mobile living. You can also see the maker preparing food inside in the video below:
