East London-based architectural and interior design studio Dedraft has recently transformed a 1900s Edwardian Garden Villa into quiet luxury with a warm contemporary vibe. Designed for a couple who relocated from London, the architects renovated the traditional building into a garden-oriented residence, enveloped by nature. The designers started the TE project and integrated the architecture of the house with the natural landscape. The project focused on making the garden feel like a living part of the interior environment. Every room of the house provides panoramic views of the stunning landscape while bringing in plentiful natural light for a cozy feel.
The Edwardian Garden Villa sits on the protected green belt land in the countryside. Due to this fact, it was important to respect and preserve the environment while remodeling the house into a modern family house. The couple tasked the architects with building a home office, a swimming pool, a pool house, a garage, and guest accommodation.
Dedraft started the TE Residence project by first removing the fake Tudor-style decorations to freshen up the façade and give the house an honest contemporary design. The studio decides to build a modern, single-story extension on the rear part of the house facing the garden. Designed as a horizontal, glazed volume, the extension stretches outwards into the garden and provides uninterrupted views of the natural landscape
The new extension provided a modern living space while unifying the ground floor space to create a hub for the family. The architects used the ribbed precast concrete band on the glazed extension to match the terracotta color of the original Edwardian-style roof of the main building. The ribbed pattern adds texture and provides tactile quality to the façade.
The studio redesigned the original rooms of the main building to accommodate the needs of the young couple. Since the new extension broadened the living space, the architects transformed the original dining room located in the front octagonal part of the main building into a spacious office room.
The garage and pool house form the secondary outbuildings. The two-story garage outbuilding has a monolithic silhouette with black-stained timber cladding. The garage has a gabled roof with flush-mounted roof lights to brighten up the interiors. It quietly sits under the oak tree and serves as a place to accommodate guests. The side-sliding door provides a clean exterior by simply disappearing into the wall. It aids in quick entry or exits without any hassle or noise.

The pool house has the same black-stained timber cladding but has a horizontal roof, unlike the gabled roof of the garage. Designed in collaboration with ND studio, the pool pavilion sits on an elevated terrace with wide concrete steps leading to the pool. You can even sunbathe while relaxing on the lounge chairs on the terrace, while admiring the natural views of the remodeled garden. The pool house includes a home gym, storage and service plant room, including an air source heat pump.
When it comes to interior, the ground floor has an open-plan layout while the upper floor features private bedrooms, as typical of Edwardian architecture heritage. The ground floor, as mentioned before, forms the living space where each zone flows into one another. The kitchen and dining room form the core of the social space. The glazed windows flood the interior with bright, natural light while the warm oak flooring adds warmth to the space. The steel-framed doors and custom joinery provide bold accents to the white color of the walls.
The TE residence project by Dedraft is a distinguished example of honoring the original Edwardian-style architecture while adding a modern touch to the living space. The team did a wonderful job at preserving the traditional charm with honest contemporary design. They prioritized material honesty, a neutral, and earthy color palette to create a space that feels calm and rejuvenating. The house’s deep integration with nature and its garden-oriented design sets it apart from standard renovated houses, embodying a quiet luxury.
