Japanese technologist group Teamlab has designed an interactive digital installation at famous Saga beef restaurant Sagaya in Tokyo. Dubbed as ‘Worlds Unleashed and then Connecting’, it is a dining space that combines eating with virtual reality. The restaurant added fascinating digital projections and sound to offer multi-sensory eating experience.

Once a dish is placed on the table, the entire space fills with projections of flowers, trees, butterflies, hopping birds and waterfalls. The relaxing sounds of running water and chirping sounds of birds create a calming effect to finesse the eating experience. Inside, there is sitting space for up to eight persons.

It is more like a digital version of the cherry-blossom bar in Washington D.C., which we have covered previously. The nature-inspired digital backdrops and sounds transform a simple space into a scenic world. As you eat, the birds can be seen hopping from one dish to another, while floating flowers and trees surround the table always.

The visuals change according to actions and behavior of particular visitors. If you are sitting still on the table, a tiny bird might sit on your hand, and if you move it might fly away, just like real birds. The digital backdrops in space change continuously, so there are chances of experiencing different visuals at different moments. Sagaya is not the first multi-sensory restaurant to offer such facilities, as there are many similar installations around the world too.
