Making tea is more than enjoying a beverage. It’s a ritual that many people don’t always have the time or patience to get right, especially with loose-leaf tea. And your regular teapot just shares the blame. Former Dyson engineer Sarah Reed, now a UK-based freelance product designer, thought the same and created the Teapot REEDesigned, a brewer that times the steeping process for you.
The Teapot REEDesigned isn’t your typical tea brewer. It uses a patent-pending mechanical system to automatically pull tea leaves out of the water at a preset time. The teapot design aims to simplify the brewing process and deliver a consistent brew without the use of electricity or batteries.
The pot has a lid, a removable mesh filter, timer units, tea chamber, and a 600 ml (20-oz) collection chamber for a decent serving size. The contraption comes with eight preset brew timings and a design-forward exterior that allows the user to enjoy the process. Its unique brewing technique ensures consistent results while maintaining the ritual and theatrics of making tea. The design looks a bit like the French Press, but without the pressing and with a timer, of course; so, you don’t over brew your tea, like never.
To use it, you put loose-leaf tea on a mesh filter, pour hot water over it, and put the lid on. Now sit back and watch the infusion happen. Slowly the flavor from the water steeped leaves is extracted. The brew gets separated from the leaves by the filter and the magnetically connected timer, which has a precise hole to control the flow speed.
After filtering through the timer, the tea is decanted into a collection chamber. As the chamber fills, the float with extracted leaves rises automatically, pulling them above the brewed tea so it doesn’t over-brew.
The Teapot REEDesigned has a set of eight timers, allowing the user to brew the tea to their preferred level. Each timer provides a 30-second incremental change in brew time. You have the option to use the quickest time, which is three minutes, or the slowest at six minutes 30 seconds. If you do not want to use the timer, the brew can be extracted in 30 seconds. The timers can be magnetically stored in the lid.
While the brewer helps the drinker to slow down and enjoy the ritual of tea making, its mechanical design helps make it more sustainable than its counterparts. The Teapot REEDesigned is made from borosilicate glass, polypropylene, and PMMA, all of which are considered sustainable materials due to their durability and ability to be recycled at the end of life.
Furthermore, by removing teabags and electricity from the equation, the Teapot REEDesigned also helps conserve power, reduce waste and microplastic contamination from the bags themselves. Reed even intends to make all the components of the brewer dishwasher-safe.
The REEDesigned teapot controls the brew so you don’t have to. It is currently available through crowdfunding on Kickstarter for an early-bird pledge of £79 (about $100). Shipping is expected to begin in June 2026.
