Exhibited at IDS Toronto, the TL-1 table lamp is the first expression of Montreal-based design studio Juba. The lamp features a hand-formed, plan-based cellulose acetate reflector that softly diffuses light in layers, giving it an architectural quality rather than a lighting fixture.
The lamp is designed to emit a soft, indirect light that gives a sense of depth through the reflector’s layers. Providing two distinct visual profiles, one luminous and the other a quieter silhouette, the lamp is an aesthetically pleasing piece.
Made in small batches in Canada, the lamp has a cast-mineral base alongside machined aluminum components. For the reflector, a hand-formed cellulose acetate, a plant-based fiber derived from wood pulp and cotton, is used. It is shaped by heat and a highly manual process, which gives each piece a natural depth and variation that can’t be replicated in the next one, making each lamp unique.
The lamp is designed to be seen as an aesthetic, statement piece and not just a lighting object. It works as an indirect, reflected light source while also bringing an architectural element to your space.
Designed to be read from every angle, it offers two viewpoints: a luminous, glowing face from the front and a quieter, calmer silhouette from behind, where light passes through the acetate reflector that carries light in layers, leaving a halo on the surface behind.
The Juba TL-1 table lamp is made to order. Each lamp is individually tested and inspected, and components are all brought together with precise, functional, and tactile details. The lamp is available in two unique colorways, Heaven and Earth. As the brand says, the lamp is engineered for atmosphere and is a minimalist, luminous piece.
