When most people picture a rooftop tent, they imagine a wedge-shaped shell riding on a truck. There are thousands of tents out there that are rooftop-compatible, but that doesn’t mean they’re spacious, either. California-based Inspired Overland is looking to change that perception with its new Trailpeak, a side-opening rooftop tent that the company touts to offer “maximum interior space without added weight.”
Since launching in 2021, Inspired Overland has made a reputation in the competitive rooftop tent space by focusing too much on weight. Its Carbonlite Rooftop Tent ranks among the lightest hardshell options available, and its standard entry-level tent weighs just 80 lbs. The Trailpeak, at 84 pounds, weighs only slightly more, but it delivers a fundamentally different experience inside.
One of the major USPs of the tent is its side-opening design. Rather than lifting a traditional clamshell top, the Trailpeak’s roof panel swings open to the side via gas-strut assist, standing nearly vertical and allowing three of the four walls to rise with it. Inside, the rooftop offers four feet of headroom across the entire interior floor, along with 6.5 feet of sleeping length. The tent boasts a weight capacity of 500 lbs, easily allowing two campers to sleep.
First spotted by New Atlas, the tent also solves one of the persistent frustrations of traditional wedge-style rooftop tents, which is the cramped foot box. “The sideways design eliminates the cramped foot box of a typical wedge-style tent, keeping the sleeping floor wide open across its 78 inches length,” the magazine writes. Since the Trailpeak’s floor opens fully across its 78-inch length, campers get a wide, open sleeping area without the narrow taper.

Packed down, the Trailpeak measures just seven inches tall, impressively slim for a tent of its interior volume. It rides 82 inches long by 51 inches wide on the vehicle roof, fitting neatly on most crossbar setups.
The exterior shell uses heavy-duty tonneau-grade vinyl for the hinged top panel, while the tent walls are stitched from waterproof 2000D Oxford fabric. Other accessories include a 1.5-inch foam mattress, an anti-condensation pad, a telescopic ladder, interior organizers, and rainfly rods.
On the downside, the Trailpeak requires campers to manually install interior support poles, unlike most hardshell rooftop tents, where the structure deploys automatically when the top is lifted. The Trailpeak can be availed at Inspired Overland’s website for $1,400.
