There’s no denying that rooftop tents (RTTs) are gaining popularity in recent times. These cozy dwellings not only offer campers extra space but also provide significantly more safety than any other traditional tents. While trailers and vehicles are part of the trend, truck campers are particularly cashing in on the RTT craze. The latest example is that of the Arizona-based company Unplug Outdoor, which recently launched the Trailster truck camper.

Akin to other truck campers, the Trailster fits into the rear of any pickup with a five to eight-foot bed. Its standout feature is its clever integration of a camper cap and rooftop tent into a single, streamlined unit. Unlike the Jeep Wrangler ARTT concept or Tonke ID.Buzz, which place RTTs on their roofs, the Trailster functions as a removable pickup cap. According to its creator, “Its innovative design merges a camper cap and rooftop tent into one sleek unit, all while maintaining overhead clearance.”

Glancing at the pictures, Trailster appears to boast a sleek, low-profile design. Unlike bulkier campers that weigh down your rig, this camper sits flush with the cab of your truck, blending seamlessly with the vehicle’s lines. Beyond aesthetics, the Unplug Outdoor Co. has crafted the Trailster to be a featherweight in its class, tipping the scales at just 215lbs for 5-foot truck bed models.

The camper exterior boasts an all-aluminum construction, which, as per the maker, is “laser cut from thick aluminum and powder coated to perfection.” This gives the camper the toughness to withstand adverse weather conditions. As aforementioned, the biggest highlight of the camper is the rooftop tent that’s integrated into the camper’s roof.

Boasting features and design similar to the iKamper Skycamp, the “strut-assisted roof folds sideways to near-vertical position, and the extended floor folds out, pulling up the tent body along with it, to complete the sleeping space,” New Atlas points out. We can also spot a 7.5-foot telescoping ladder that extends to the ground to deliver access up to the tent.

The tent is made of 280-gram polyester ripstop blackout canvas boasting a 2,000 mm waterproof rating. The tent includes a two-inch memory foam mattress as part of the standard kit, and Unplug also offers a 4-inch inflatable mattress as an upgrade. The amount of sleeping space depends on the size of the truck’s bed since the Trailster cap is designed to fit precisely, with floor areas ranging between 78 x 48 inches on 5-foot short beds to 84 x 84 inches on 8-foot beds.

Inside, the camper features an 8-foot-long by 4-foot-wide sleeping area, which is spacious enough for two adults, a kid, or even a couple of dogs to stretch out comfortably. Not to mention, the included 1.5-inch memory foam mattress offers comfort to the campers. The tent also comes with integrated heater and AC ports. Other features include an array of internal pockets and sleeves that help campers stay organized, while a 12-inch tablet sleeve on the ceiling comes in handy for watching movies or TV shows. It is important to note that the tent causes the Trailster to sit lower than other caps, but it still leaves plenty of bed space open for hauling other important gear.

The Trailster’s attention to detail extends to its exterior features, too. Keyed locking latches on all three doors keep your gear secure, and there’s a front and rear sliding window to maintain visibility through your truck’s rearview mirror. The side and rear doors come with integrated MOLLE panels and rivnuts, making it easy to mount accessories or extra gear.

Another compelling aspect of the Trailster truck camper is its affordability. Unplug Outdoor Co. markets it as the most budget-friendly truck camper on the market. Priced between $5,500-$6,500, depending on the optional add-on and a range of other factors, the camper can be availed from the official website of Unplug.

Unplug Outdoor Co. website hints at complementary products like the DOGGO RTT Ramp and modular accessories like awnings and bed racks. However, at the moment, we are not sure if it would be compatible with the Trailster camper.
