Some creations are born from curiosity and end up rewriting the rules. That’s exactly what the Wheelhome’s latest creation, a sleek rooftop camper for the curved roofline of a Tesla Model 3, does. The brainchild of Stephen Wheeler, founder of the British camper company Wheelhome, the Dashaway eRC (electric roof camper), isn’t your typical rooftop add-on. It is attached to the Tesla Model 3 through a combination of crossbars and a hitch-mounted tow bar.
The Dashaway eRD weighs 330 pounds (150 kg). It is made possible with thoughtful construction and by ditching traditional gelcoat for a bed liner-style, making it light for its size yet sturdy enough for the open road. Open the roof and the eRC reveals a full-height living space that turns the Tesla’s rear into a cozy mobile suite. Inside is a two-seat sofa that flips into a 75 x 47-inch double bed, shelves and consoles for gear, and even a small sink setup.
Having been through 3,500 miles across Iceland, Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands, Dashaway eRC is thoroughly tested, and the design could take on real-world conditions. The plan is to launch it at £23,400 (about $31,000), in a form factor tailored for the back of the Model 3.
The pop-up roof camper is better than any hard-sided rooftop tent for many reasons, including its standing height interior, glazed with large windows and a mesh door, and its lightweight form factor. It mounts onto the Tesla Model 3 without any modifications, transforming the electric vehicle into a full-fledged camping solution with a sofa bed, an equipped kitchen featuring an induction cooktop, microwave, oven, and air fryer, and a well-lit interior.

A portable power station onboard keeps the lights on and runs cooking appliances, while a hidden cabinet discreetly stores a portable toilet. Wheeler has even built in a shore power system that allows the camper to plug into an external outlet, powering the pod while simultaneously charging the Tesla’s battery.
The Wheelhome rooftop camper for the Model 3 is fully dismountable. The Dashaway eRC can be easily mounted or removed by a single person without effort. If you own a Model 3 and dream of camping in your prized EV, be prepared to shell out around 30 grand for this rooftop camper, designed exclusively for your ride, no questions asked.
