The style of architecture changes around the world but the idea of building structures in harmony with nature has become a global favorite. One recent example is Yangnar Studio which found a unique way to add a nature-friendly touch to a private house in the hills of Doi Luang, Chiang Dao, Thailand. Named Oyea, the project comprises three units featuring a distinctive roof made from Gurjan leaves.

The project is mainly inspired by the hills’ olive trees and the local community. So, the Oyea house has been thoughtfully placed, with minimum changes to the sloped site. The architect’s team has chosen the materials carefully so that the structures blend with the surrounding environment. They have even used recycled wood in the construction.

As in Thailand, the readily available abundance of bamboo has led the locals to traditionally use it for homes, and even this modern house embraces this versatile material. Various kinds of bamboo have been used in the construction and even the Gurjan leaves are tied together as the top layer on the roof with bamboo sticks. As visible in the pictures, there is a layer of corrugated metal under the Gurjan leaf layer as it just serves the purpose of fitting into the forest landscape.

Apart from the exterior, the interior space of the Oyea house is also designed with a similar theme. The wooden walls and flooring are visible throughout the house, even in the bathroom. The project also includes a stargazing area and fire pit to enhance the overall experience at the place.

This 72 sqm house is designed to serve as a vacation rental amidst a forest. The Gurjan leaf roof is a quirky feature that makes the structures gel with the surroundings.
