GanDan is a handcrafted bench designed by four students (ChenYu Shih, ShinChi Yang, BoCheng Guo, and JieYi Chen) of the Tainan University of Technology, Taiwan. They wanted to create a piece of wooden furniture that is not hard like most of the furniture made of solid wood. This lead to choosing an innovative material: wood veneer rather than solid wood.

The bench is created by wrapping and enlacing golden teak wood veneer in Bunaco style. This woodworking style prevents wastage which is relatively environmentally friendly. It also references the traditional craftsmanship of Aomori Prefecture, Japan.

The GanDan bench looks hard as a wooden bench but offers soft elasticity when sitting with foam filling inside the cocoon sphere. Continuously wrapped in circles and layers, the wood veneer bench is simplistic beauty. It has a contoured, cylindrical shape that ensures comfort while sitting.

The project started in August 2020 and was completed in February 2021. It is Winner of A’ Design Award in Furniture Design Category, 2020-2021. The makers with construction of this bench wanted to support the hand-made woodworking craft, which is gradually vanishing from the world.
