Children love to play with castles, and the Casul chairs become one in seconds. Otherwise a chair for kids, you can transform the seats into a children’s playset resembling a miniature throne rendered in plywood. Designed by Irish furniture designer James Murphy, the Casul chairs feature clever timber joints and kid-safe hinges that allow the whole thing to unfold into a castle.

With these seats-cum-play sets, children can create imaginary worlds of their own. One of these chairs is finished in chalkboard paint, letting the little ones draw and decorate their castles as they like. Another version features foam swords hidden under the seat, while the cushions can be used as shields in various scenarios.

Talking to Homecrux about these unique chairs, Murphy informs, “Casul is a fun, open-ended piece of furniture that harnesses children’s creativity and curiosity, and supports them developmentally through play.”

With only two moves, the seats turn into castles that harness children’s creativity and curiosity while helping their development and creativity grow through play. Murphy has designed the play set for his final year’s major project, providing an interactive play experience that promotes creativity.

Murphy convinced his tutors to let their children test the designs. The children imagined various play scenarios with the castles and also came up with new features such as the chalkboard option. Murphy jokingly told Dezeen that children are the best critics as they tell you exactly what they think or want without any hesitation.

The seats feature jigsaw joints cut into the seat panel, which interlock to keep the chair together. These joints then let the chairs unfold into a castle easily. Friction hinges are used to hold the panels in place without any fear of trapping kids’ little fingers. With another set of those hinges, the legs open to form the structure while the triangular buttresses prevent them from tripping.

If you decide to get multiple Casuls for your little one, they can all be joined to create an even bigger playset. James Murphy’s Casul Chairs pair functionality with the right amount of fun and whimsy, apt for promoting creativity and growth.
