Tesla Offers Wireless Charging Pad Nobody Asked For

You don’t necessarily need to be a tech lover if you are a hardcore Musk fan

If ‘slapping a new skin’ was a phrase, I’d have loosely used it for the man, the myth, the legend-Elon Musk. Not because he is trying to give complexion to his humanoid robots, rather because he is trying too hard to pirate the idea that didn’t pay off his ‘newly made foes’ Apple well in past. Despite being caught up in the middle of controversies, the man never fails to amaze us, and silently launches products in the market as if it’s some filler to complement the next greatest innovations he will come up with.

The Tesla boss has now announced a $300 charging mat that would simultaneously charge up to three Qi-compatible devices at one time. Be it your iPhone, AirPods, or any other Android device, the mat charges it all, leaving Apple Watch or other smartwatches aside.

The Wireless Charging Platform provides 15W of fast charging power per device for up to three devices simultaneously. But $300 is what it gets down to and being frankly honest, it’s absurdly overpriced even by Apple’s standard, which once tried, tested, failed, and ultimately canceled it (wireless charging pad) citing engineering issues.

What Apple failed at, Musk took as a golden opportunity and is ready to bait his die-hard followers. The wireless charging platform is inspired by the angular design and metallic styling of Cybertruck. Well, there is no Cybertruck in the market yet, but shedding more money on its lookalike isn’t a bad idea, after all, it comes from the warehouse of Elon Musk. And, you don’t necessarily need to be a tech lover, if you are a hardcore Musk fan!

As pointed out by 9to5Mac, there is a video available on Tesla’s website where one can spot the wireless charging platform having 30 coils lined up in a design akin to what Apple was fidgeting around with. Irrespective of Musk scrapping the idea, the ultimate truth is he is actually selling these Wireless Charging platforms, unlike Apple.

The charger will start shipping in February 2023 and shall feature an integrated USB-C cable, a 65W USB-C adapter, and a detachable magnetic stand. The stand allows you to lay the charger flat or at any given angle for better viewing. Boasting a sleek design, the charging mat is composed of aluminum housing that adds a bit of aesthetic appeal to it.

Irrespective of the good and the bad part, I don’t really want to be too harsh on Musk this time. The man is going through a lot, so much so that he is reportedly short on his office rent. As a result, the Twitter boss is apparently selling whatever is left in his office building. While the auction is supposed to take place next year, he thought of launching a wireless charging pad in meantime.

Whatever the outcome, (whether it ends up as a success or overheats easily) you cannot deny how ludicrously wasteful wireless chargers already are and the Tesla pad is significantly worse. I am not the one saying it, it’s just twitter buzzing with witticism.
