Forget the projectors, to hell with televisions, and snub vacuum cleaners, because LG’s innovation of the decade is here. To anyone’s surprise, it is neither a refrigerator nor a washing machine. Those of you guessed it to be a cooking appliance, I am sorry! Don’t dare think the South Korean tech giant is dirtying its hands in the phone business again. This time around, LG is rather betting on a retro-futuristic concept speaker that the company plans to unveil at CES 2024.

I know, I exaggerated by calling it ‘the innovation of the decade,’ but had I been a Samsung employee, I would have taken that pun on my arched rivals. What LG thinks would possibly garner them limelight at the biggest tech event of the year, Samsung did that a decade back, with the unveiling of the HW-F750; the world’s first soundbar with a vacuum tube amp. The only difference is LG is teasing DupeBox as a ‘concept speaker’ rather than a soundbar.

Long story short, ten days from now, when the world will be discussing the best, worst, and most obnoxious gadgets unveiled at CES 2024, LG’s DukeBox, which the company calls ‘an innovative audio product’ will make the cut in the latter. Designed by LG Labs, the DukeBox marries old-timey vacuum tubes as seen on a jukebox with a modern OLED panel for a mixed bag of audio-visual wonders.

In LG’s language, “The product seamlessly combines the charm of vacuum tube audio with cutting-edge transparent OLED panel technology.” The product leverages vacuum tube audio technology, a concept that has lived on jukeboxes dating back to as early as 1890. LG isn’t exactly reinventing the wheel with its DukeBox but blending the now over a century-old audio technology with a modern touch through the inclusion of an OLED screen.

Though marketed as a speaker, the DukeBox is still intended to work like any old display. “The transparency of the OLED display can be adjusted, creating a captivating visual effect reminiscent of a vacuum tube audio system enclosed in a transparent glass box. Moreover, the DukeBox is versatile and can be used to enjoy high-quality content such as movies, or even create a cozy fireplace ambiance where the vacuum tube is visible amidst the flickering flames,” the company mentions.

The DukeBox boasts a transparent OLED panel showcasing the tube amplifier. In tandem with its vacuum tubes, LG’s DukeBox also has a front-facing bottom speaker and two 360 speakers for the ultimate soundscape.

The details on pricing and availability remain undisclosed at the time of writing. As aforementioned the speaker is in the conceptual stage for now, we may have a better clarity once LG has this ready for the market. Until then, LG DukeBox appears less of a gadget and more like a home decor item!
