While we all seem to love and desire to live in a tiny house, it remains a distant dream because the whole tiny house movement is pivoting from its basics. The idea of a tiny house on wheels has shifted from a cost-effective and sustainable way of living to a trend catering to the luxurious lifestyle of a few.

Scouring the internet, I have often come across stories and instances where people with generational wealth or high-paying careers are the ones buying tiny houses, which are rarely “tiny” by the definition of the industry. Since these are custom-built with high-end features, they become blogger bait. The blogosphere is full of tiny homes going upward of $100,000, but little heed is given to the slightly affordable and less fancier homes.

Expensive is not always better, and the ‘Sunshine in the City’ tiny house, a mobile home currently set up as an Airbnb in Texas is a befitting example. This $75K odd micro-dwelling is basic but well thought out to be considered for full-time living.

Designed by Indigo River Tiny Homes, the micro-dwelling is based on a double-axle trailer. It is finished in exterior cedar accenting and has a full-light Outswing exterior door that welcomes visitors inside. Despite measuring just 20 feet in length and 8.5 feet in width, the Sunshine in the City tiny house manages to make room for a living room, loft bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom.

Visitors enter first into this tiny house’s living room, which is small yet spacious to be furnished with a sofa and a table. I say ‘to be’ because Indigo River Tiny Homes has taken Decathlon Tiny Homes route to keep the living area empty, only for the future dwellers or Airbnb owners to customize it themselves.

Nearby is the kitchen, which has full-size appliances including a microwave, range hood, a cooktop, a fridge, cabinetry, and a sink. The kitchen has multiple drawers and cabinets alongside a pop-up dining bar that can also be used for chopping or as a workspace, depending on the requirement. The bathroom is separated from the kitchen with a small pocket door and contains a sink, composting toilet, shower, and a washer/dryer, plus some more storage space.

There is a single bedroom in the Sunshine in the City tiny house. Accessed via storage-integrated stairs, the bedroom can easily sleep a couple. It also features shelving, a wardrobe, and a lowered platform to make it easier to stand upright and get dressed.

The home is powered via a standard RV-style hookup and was delivered as a turnkey build, ready to move in. While we are not familiar with the exact cost, we presume it has gone for about $75,000, the base price of the Rambler Model that Sunshine in the city tiny house is based on.
