Every year, a staggering amount of food is thrown away, not because it’s spoiled, but because it’s forgotten. In kitchens around the world, perfectly edible meals get lost in the fridge, passed over, and eventually tossed. Why blame others when I myself am guilty? There have been instances when I have forgotten about leftover food only to discover it in the fridge days later, when it has become absolutely stale. This cycle of waste happens quietly, but the impact is massive.

But what if tracking your leftovers was as easy as glancing at your phone? What if your storage containers could remind you what’s inside, when it will expire, and even suggest ways to use it? That’s exactly what FoodTusker aims to solve. Launched today on Kickstarter, FoodTusker is the world’s first truly smart food container system. This innovative device offers a practical, tech-driven solution to the everyday problem of forgotten food, and is a must-have device for households looking to waste less and save more.

Buy: $29

To put that into context, a report by the United Nations Environment Program suggests that households globally are responsible for over 1.05 billion metric tons of food waste every year. That’s the equivalent of one billion meals being discarded every single day, an average of 79 kilograms of wasted food per household annually. Beyond the moral dilemma of food insecurity, this waste contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, particularly methane from landfills, adding environmental urgency to the issue.

FoodTusker aims at tackling this severe issue with its smart tracker that attaches to just about any type of food storage. It attaches to your regular containers, foil-wrapped leftovers, plastic-wrapped items, or even takeout boxes. Once attached, users log the food through the FoodTusker mobile app, available for both iOS and Android, or simply take a photo of the item. From there, the system takes over.

Founder and CEO Steven Hong explains the broader mission: “Food waste is not just a household inconvenience; it’s a global crisis. Our goal with FoodTusker is to give families an easy, reliable way to track what they already have, so good food doesn’t end up in the trash. With FoodTusker, remembering your leftovers becomes as simple as glancing at a screen or receiving a phone notification.”

Getting back to the product, each tracker is equipped with a power-efficient E-Ink display, which clearly shows the name of the food, a photo, and an easy-to-read expiration countdown. This visual cue alone can drastically reduce the number of forgotten meals pushed to the back of the fridge.

But FoodTusker doesn’t stop there. It includes a suite of features designed to make food storage smarter, safer, and more collaborative. The system’s temperature sensors monitor the storage environment, alerting users if food has been kept in unsafe conditions. The app even offers a recipe finder, suggesting meal ideas based on the leftovers you already have, helping you make the most of every ingredient before it spoils.

Unlike other food tracking apps or container systems, FoodTusker is designed with the entire household in mind. Multiple users can stay synced, receiving reminders and notifications so everyone knows what’s available to eat. The app also includes a comprehensive analytics dashboard, showing how much food and money you’re saving over time. This not only encourages continued use but builds sustainable habits that can benefit households financially and environmentally.

With a database of over 1.2 million food items, including 10,000 non-branded foods, nearly 1 million branded products, and more than 200,000 restaurant meals, the app makes food logging fast and flexible. Users can even add custom entries with their own photos and descriptions.

From an efficiency standpoint, the tracker’s E-Ink screen consumes power only when updated, and a deep sleep mode allows it to perform periodic temperature checks and motion detection while conserving energy. As a result, each tracker can last for over two months on a single charge, making it convenient to use without constant recharging.

Early backers can take advantage of exclusive early-bird packages, available in limited quantities. With each unit placed in a household, FoodTusker not only saves food, it empowers families to make smarter, more sustainable choices. The FoodTusker Kickstarter campaign is now live with a model available for a launch special price of $29.
