IKEA Introduces Bed for Your Smartphone to Curb Late-Night Doomscrolling

IKEA wants your phone to go to bed, too... So you can finally rest

I used to read before bed. I still do, but sometimes my phone seems to tell interesting stories, and I go down the rabbit hole of doomscrolling. Unsurprisingly, I have found myself either asleep with my phone next to me or unable to sleep because the screen is interfering with my system. This is not just my story. Many of us have gotten into a bad habit of staying glued to our phone screens from dawn till dusk, and often vice versa. IKEA UAE wishes to change this habit of ours for the better with its Phone Sleep Collection, a miniature bed set for smartphones.

IKEA’s beds for phones come complete with wood slats, bedding, and an embedded NFC chip. These beds connect to the IKEA UAE app and track how long you stay screen-free at night. Part of the brand’s Complete Sleep initiative, these miniature beds aim at getting you to log off before bed. If you can go seven hours without your phone for seven consecutive nights, you earn a voucher for AED 100 (about $27).

Carla Klumpenaar, general manager of marketing, communications, HF, and retail design at IKEA Al-Futtaim, shared, “Sleep is one of the most important design projects in our lives, yet it’s often the most overlooked. Our phones have often become uninvited guests in the bedroom, disrupting the very moments meant for rest. The Phone Sleep Collection turns that challenge into a playful wellness routine, giving people permission to disconnect with intention. By combining design with a simple wellness solution, we are empowering people to reclaim their nights, take back control of their routines, and wake up recharged for what matters most. That is the IKEA vision of a better everyday life.”

If you spend AED 750 (about $204) or more in the store with at least one item from IKEA’s Complete Sleep collection, you will receive one of these miniature phone beds at checkout. In all fairness, it just seems to be a way of upscaling the sales. And it’s not like it is the first time something like this has been invented.

Almost a decade ago, Arianna Huffington’s phone charging bed, namely, the Phone Bed, made headlines. Now that was a product worth consideration as it would charge your smartphones as well, unlike IKEA’s gimmick, which merely tracks your screen-free time, which many of the phones do themselves. So it all depends on you, the wise user, whether to fall for it or not.
