The kitchen and bath products manufacturer Kohler’s new Pearlized iridescent coating will transform your ceramic sink into a luminous work of functional art. Developed in collaboration with artist David Franklin during his residency at Kohler MakerSpace, this finish uses physical vapor deposition (PVD) technology, originally used on faucets, to create a rainbow-like glow on ceramic.
The finish captures the natural iridescence of fish scales and water at sunset. This makes the sinks appear as if they change color and shimmer when viewed from different angles or under shifting light.
Franklin got inspiration to develop this unique finish while creating the Once and Forever Lake Michigan sculpture, composed of 1,600 highly detailed ceramic fish. During that project, he and Kohler’s engineering team experimented with applying PVD technology, typically used on metal fixtures and faucets, to his ceramic fish. That innovation and reimagination of PVD technology paved the path for the finish.
The Kohler Pearlized finish will be introduced on the Derring Carillon Artist Editions sink made by artisans in Wisconsin. To introduce the new finish, Kohler has partnered with Harry Nuriev, artist, founder, and creative director of Crosby Studios, for an immersive installation inspired by Design Miami‘s 2025 theme, Make. Believe, where these sinks will be showcased for the audience as a modern artistic expression. “The Pearlized finish is more than a surface, it’s a living canvas, continually changing as we interact with it,” explained Nuriev.
