The feeling of physically controlling a table lamp is the main idea behind the TOTEM DE LUZ by Kutarq Studio. It is a kinetic lamp that allows you to change its illumination style with a physical interaction. As you physically move its light source, it creates a different lighting mood in the space. Designed and crafted as a private commission project for Porfirio Estebaranz, it is not just a functional light but a sculptural piece that redefines the relationship between light, space, and time.

Each sculptural lamp is composed of stainless steel panels, nautical tensioners, pulleys, and counterweights, a light source, an onyx diffuser, and a glass sphere reflector. These elements form a visible mechanical system inside the structure outfitted between two steel panels with shelves to attach components. The light source moves up and down through a double-pulley mechanism, which controls the way light reacts.

A simple movement of the spotlight changes its purpose. When raised, the spotlight meets a translucent onyx diffuser at the top, offering a warm, meditative glow across the ceiling. It fills the space with subtle radiance. As the pulley lowers the light, you get a new lighting function.

Aligned with an oval aperture on the TOTEM’s side, the light redirects to offer focused illumination for reading or writing. This manual dimming mechanism is the core highlight of the project, allowing an interactive connection between the user, the light sculpture, and the surrounding environment.
