The experience of design may vary for people, but most of us will agree that it is not only meant for newness and functionality, but should also fulfil human experience and material needs of the future. With the ongoing Milan Design Week 2026, we have featured several furniture and lighting designs, but we always have a special focus on material innovation. Case in point is the immersive installation titled “Ceramics Forged in Light” by Turkish bathroom brand VitrA and architecture firm Snøhetta that explores how ceramics can be shaped, transformed, and reimagined through circular design.

The installation is created for INTERNI magazine’s MATERIAE exhibition, exploring the technical and experimental potential of materials within contemporary design. You can see here VitrA’s continued interest in experimentation and its ongoing advances in circular production. The company is now able to reintroduce ceramics into the manufacturing process. This shows materials are now changing their ongoing cycle from origin to renewal.

The installation uses materials, smells, and sounds to create an immersive experience where ordinary objects act as carriers of experience or meaning. Light coming in through openings in the ceiling, like in old bathhouses, symbolizes the transformative force (fire) that turns raw material (ceramic) into something new.

The shifting pattern of light across water and stone almost feels like a choreographed dance. Basins, vessels, and surfaces appear dynamic as light and water transform their appearance over time. At the center is a water-filled bowl that reflects ceramic objects, encouraging visitors to rethink their feelings and design.

As noted by designboom, the Nova Vita recycled tile collection and recycled ceramic washbasin are core highlights of the installation for eco-conscious homeowners. The washbasins are finished in a soft, matte beige and are available in five distinct shapes, like round, square, oval, TV, and pebble.

The porcelain tiles are also crafted with recycled material and verified by SCS Global Services. These innovations reflect VitrA’s commitment to maximizing its contribution to the circular economy.

The Ceramics Forged in Light exhibition highlights ceramics’ natural qualities, skilled craftsmanship, and new technology to show that careful use of materials can lead to sustainable design ideas. It challenges the traditional lifecycle of ceramics to open new scopes for material transformation.
