Lavenne Launches $549 Office Chair to Take on Herman Miller

Also comes in Pro version that adds an air-cell system, allowing adjustable support zones and lumbar pressure control

My mood is determined by the chair I sit on and the tea I drink. While I can compromise on the latter bit, a good chair that is ergonomic and breathable is a prerequisite; as is the case with most of you, I am sure. Aeron Chair by Herman Miller is considered the best in this regard, but the company has faced active competition from up-and-coming brands with much promise. One new entrant making its presence felt is the Lavenne R9 ergonomic chair, which, according to the maker, offers “Dynamic spine support and movement-based ergonomics.”

The biggest USP of the R9 ergonomic chair is its Dynamic Spine System.ย According to the companyโ€™s press release, the chair is built around a rail-guided sliding backrest and a dual X-shaped lumbar tracking mechanism; the system enables the backrest to slide, tilt, and adjust in height simultaneously, dynamically responding to the userโ€™s movements.

That is a fundamentally different approach from the Libernovo Omni, a chair I covered after its Kickstarter run. The Omni uses an electric motor to power its Bionic FlexFit backrest along with a built-in stretch massage system to relieve tension and support your spine. Unlike the Libernovo Omni, the R9’s spine mechanism runs on pure mechanical linkage, with your own back pressure driving the movement and a spring-return doing the rest.

The spine system sits on what Lavenne calls its Free-Hover Carbon Chassis, a suspension platform built from carbon-fiber and glass-fiber composite that delivers consistent resistance across the entire recline range. This is meant to be an upgrade on conventional spring-based mechanisms, letting you shift between positions and hold them without fighting the chair.

It is also what allows the R9 to hover at virtually any recline angle rather than locking you into fixed positions, and it powers a five-degree adaptive forward tilt that moves the entire chassis and backrest forward together to help maintain spinal alignment during focused work like typing or coding.

Other notable features include a headrest and backrest that are built as a single S-curve structure rather than two separate pieces, closing the support gap that usually causes neck strain, with a manually adjustable air cushion for fine-tuning neck alignment. The armrests get full 360-degree rotation with adjustable height, depth, width, and angle.

The seat features a waterfall edge that slopes downward rather than the flat, straight edge most chairs use, reducing pressure on the thighs during long sessions. Height adjustment is continuous rather than stepped, and the lumbar support can be manually matched to your spine’s curvature.

As aforementioned, it also comes in a Pro version, where the electronics play their part. The Pro version adds 11 built-in air pressure chambers powered by a rechargeable battery, controlled via remote, with six massage modes, including Wave, Pulse, and Shiatsu, aimed at active contouring and relieving spinal tension.

Priced at $549, the R9 costs less than the Libernovo Omni’s roughly $648 asking price. It comes in well below the Odinlake Ergo Butterfly 753, a $999 chair I liked for its aluminum alloy frame, butterfly split backrest, and 120,000 durability-testing cycles. The R9 fits users between 5.1 feet and 6.3 feet tall, and holds up to 350 lbs. Lavenne says the design underwent over 120,000 testing cycles and six rounds of prototyping, and has been checked against ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 and EN 1335 standards.

The Lavenne R9 ergonomic chair is live on Kickstarter at a Super Early Bird price of $549, 39 percent off its retail of $899. The company also offers the R9 Pro Version for $649, 41 percent off its retail price of $1,099. The campaign has already blown past its funding goal within weeks of launch, and given that I spend something like 10 to 12 hours a day sitting in a chair between writing, reviewing, and everything else Homecrux throws my way, I couldn’t just scroll past this one.

Whether the R9 walks the talk remains to be seen once units start shipping. For the time being, the R9 at $549 is an affordable alternative to the Omni and the Butterfly 753. Those who donโ€™t have the budget can check more affordable options like the Sihoo M18, priced at $160, a price tag that buys you a perfectly decent chair but none of the carbon fiber or spine tracking.
