IKEA ROGNAN – Robotic Space Saving Furniture for Small Spaces

With all technology out there it was only time when we saw robotic furniture that solves the ever-increasing space crunch in urban settings. Thankfully, IKEA has been working in collaboration with Ori Living (American furniture startup) on touch-operated robotic furniture which can be put to good use for different requirements. The all-in-one furniture unit is based on IKEA’s modular storage solution dubbed PLASTA.

At the Democratic Design Days annual conference held in Älmhult, Sweden, IKEA revealed the ROGNAN robotic furniture system that functions as a bed to sleep, couch to relax, a desk to work and a wardrobe. Occupying roughly 115 square feet floor area, this space-saving furniture unit is perfect for small & studio apartments.

Utilizing Ori’s robotic platform, ROGNAN has wheels and tracks underneath to make the functionality possible. With the touch of a button, the retractable bed is concealed into the lower level and the storage unit moves to make use of the sofa when needed. Likewise, the retractable desk section can be used when needed.

Ori CEO Hasier Larrea said,

As living spaces become smaller and smaller we can’t keep using all the same furniture we’ve been using for many years. We need to think about a new generation of furniture. You can almost call it furniture with superpowers.

Basically, the robotic furniture divides a small room into two, making full use of the available space to maximize function and reduce clutter. Of course, comfort and convenience have been smartly kept in mind which makes this space-saving furniture unit irresistible.

Price for ROGNAN has not yet been revealed but it is set to launch in 2020, initially for Hong Kong and Japanese dwellers.
