Museum of Architecture and Design has recently announced New York-based designer Karim Rashid as Laureate of the American Prize for Design 2020. In collaboration with Good Design, this prestigious prize is annually awarded by the European Centre for Architecture and Urban Studies and the Chicago Athenaeum for lifetime achievement in communications design, industrial design, and graphic design.

Rashid is a popular name in the contemporary design industry. Egyptian-born and Canadian-raised industrial designer is well-known across the world for his Bobble water flask and Snoop and Woopy chair.

At age 60, Rashid has about 111 tabletop projects, 46 fashion works, 59 graphic designs, 34 buildings, 306 furniture projects, 71 lighting designs, 232 household projects, 27 hotels, 19 residential designs, 102, interiors, 76 packaging projects, 35 architectural materials projects, and 93 exhibitions, under his name.

According to Rashid, the design is his lifelong hobby. For him, design is something very emotional, romantic, experiential, poetic, and so human to constantly move everyone forward. He intends to change the physical world while evolving, innovating, and changing with time.

On his big win this year, Rashid said,

I am so grateful to be recognized as an American designer, since opening my office in New York City, 30 years ago. Design is a way of creating human experiences, betterment of society, shaping culture, and growing an economy. In these last 30 years, I observed that design has touched every aspect of human living, and continues to improve the world.

Rashid holds honorary doctorates from the Ontario College of Art & Design and Corcoran College of Art & Design. He even holds Honorary Doctorates from Carlton University, Pratt Institute, OCAD in Toronto, Corcoran College of Art & Design, and British Institute of Interior Design. He further pursued study in Italy with Rodolfo Benetto and Ettore Sottsass among others.

With over 4,000 designs in products, client work in more than 40 countries, and around 300 awards to his name, Rashid’s zeal to transcend and evolve with time makes him one-of-a-kind designer of his generation.

Probably, there’s no other designer today who can reshape and reinvent objects with such originality and impressive presence. There’s something special about his every design that makes his creation novel, fresh, and out-of-this-world.
