Coffee tastes even better when, instead of an espresso machine, an R 18 motorcycle engine dispenses it. This is the kind of luxury motorheads crave. To support them in the endeavour, BMW Motorrad has partnered with German espresso manufacturer ECM to release limited-edition handmade units of the espresso machine called the Big Coffee Boxer.
Announced yesterday, the collaboration between BMW Motorrad and ECM has garnered media attention and created a buzz among coffee aficionados and motorcycle enthusiasts alike. And rightfully so, considering the Big Coffee Boxer is no ordinary espresso machine. The machine is built using authentic components from the BMW R 18 motorcycle’s 1802 cc two-cylinder boxer engine, the largest ever produced by BMW Motorrad to date.
Limited to 80 units, the espresso machine combines the rugged aesthetic of the R 18’s air/oil-cooled boxer engine with the finesse of high-end espresso technology. BMW’s elite craftsmanship level is evident in the polished metal and chrome elements, which lend the coffee machine a high-end, custom-built feel that starkly contrasts with the typical sleek designs of conventional espresso machines.
The incorporation of a pressure gauge and valve-like components suggests the use of the engine’s mechanical precision to drive the high-pressure extraction process of espresso, adding a layer of technical sophistication. “Accordingly, the espresso machine components are very discreetly integrated, allowing the fascinating sculptural appearance of the BMW Big Boxer to take center stage,” BMW Group states in a press release.
“Mounted on a sleek metal frame and equipped with a seemingly floating drip tray, the Big Coffee Boxer is an eye-catcher for motorcycle and espresso enthusiasts alike,” the company points out. All-in-all, the design retains the engine’s sculptural silhouette, with espresso-making components seamlessly integrated to preserve its mechanical beauty.

Beyond its head-turning looks, the Big Coffee Boxer is a powerhouse of espresso-making technology. It features two independent water circulation systems, allowing simultaneous preparation of coffee and milk foam, perfect for crafting lattes or cappuccinos without delay. The machine also boasts an ultra-quiet rotary pump and a shot counter that displays brewing time, ensuring precision with every pour.
Priced at €7,900 (about US$9,000), the Big Coffee Boxer is a luxury investment. Available exclusively through ECM Exclusive Line dealers, its limited run of 80 units makes it a coveted item for BMW enthusiasts and coffee lovers with a taste for the extraordinary.
So, if you have €7,900 ($9,000) lying around in your wallet or a passion for both horsepower and espresso, the Big Coffee Boxer should be on your checklist. If not, $1500 Fellow Espresso machine can make up for the loss or lack of budget.
