In the world of bookshelves, Jisu Kim stands out with a design inspired by the sliding structures of ‘manhwabang,’ the iconic comic book rental shops in Northeast Asia. Unlike traditional ‘manhwabang’ bookshelves that focus on maximizing storage, Kim’s creation takes a unique approach, utilizing the sliding structure to evoke an unfamiliar sensation: a void reminiscent of a wintry atmosphere.

Crafted from ash wood stained with a tranquil black finish, the bookshelf is not just aesthetically pleasing but also reinforced with a central iron insert for enhanced durability. The concealed handle, also made from ash wood with a black stain finish, prioritizes a comfortable grip and ergonomic contours.

The incorporation of 3D-printed wheels and stoppers allows for smooth sliding in both directions, enhancing the functionality of the design. But what truly sets Kim’s bookshelf apart is the attention to detail in creating an immersive experience.

To convey the cold feeling of a winter forest within the space, Kim has integrated cool-toned adjustable lighting and acrylic with gradient sanding. Thin steel plates, intricately cut into different patterns, mirror the image of wood and are layered to represent the chilly atmosphere of a winter forest. The result is a design that introduces a mysterious null space, where the chill of the winter forest is profound.

Opening and closing the bookshelf becomes more than a practical task; it transforms into a serene experience like feeling the crisp breeze in a winter forest. Kim’s innovative approach not only challenges the conventional purpose of bookshelves but also brings a touch of nature and tranquility into the realm of furniture design. This bookshelf is not just a storage solution; it’s a gateway to a winter forest adventure within the confines of one’s home.
