We’ve all had caramel candies when we were little. Inspired by the love and nostalgia for those sweets, industrial designer Maxim Tatarintsev has created a collection of modular lighting and furniture, named Caramel, reminding us that even though we are busy at work, there’s always time for some whimsy and fun. Based on the author’s personal reflection, the collection stems from a period of deep contemplation regarding life values and goals.

Tatarintsev, in collaboration with the brand Svoy Design, designed the collection to focus on simplicity and user-driven customization. It is not a set of fixed products but a system of interchangeable elements. The users can configure these components into personalized arrangements to fit their space. Each element adds a touch of childhood memories to every space.

“We all come from childhood,” the designer says. “That is exactly where our true self lies—sincere, curious, and able to enjoy the little things. I looked back at that era and found a foothold there. Its symbol became a simple but bright caramel candy – a recognizable sign of the entire 90s and 2000s generation”.

The collection includes pendant, ceiling, and wall-mounted lighting fixtures. These lighting components are crafted from semi-porcelain using traditional casting techniques and fired at almost 1100 degrees Celsius. This high-temperature process vitrifies the clay, ensuring a refined, smooth surface that supports the collection’s soft, bulbous aesthetic.

The pieces are then hand-finished and assembled into modular units, allowing the natural quality of the ceramic to interact with the light for a diffused glow. Individual lighting pieces act as components in a set, allowing the users to arrange them in various lighting scenarios as desired.

The collection also features side tables and ottomans that are manufactured using a different, more rugged process. They are made from an experimental composite material developed specifically by the manufacturer. This increases the durability and weather resistance, making these puffy furniture pieces suitable for both indoor and outdoor settings.

Featuring a color palette of warm, confectionery-inspired tones, the customizable collection primarily revolves around a core set of caramel shades. The designer intends for the tones to evoke childhood memories and create a sense of warmth in the environment. The Caramel collection is an emotional manifesto offering an alternative to modern information overload by appealing to one’s pure, authentic self.
