Salone del Mobile officially kicked off at Fiera Milano in Rho last week, branching across various platforms catering to different design forms, including furniture. The elegant galleries in Milan were filled with stunning works from designers worldwide, spanning multiple genres. Amidst this creative cacophony is a chair designer who packed his creations—a chair and a stool—into a suitcase in San Francisco and flew all the way to Milan to assemble them.

The Carousel Chair and the Slant Stool are both the brainchild of Alessandro Pagura. On showcase at the Isola Design gallery, in Milan Design Week, the Carousel Chair and its little brother may seem lost in the gallery surrounded by some incredible works of other fascinating designers, but it does have a distinct appeal.

Whether that is because of its wooden construction or the flat packing design, I’m not sure – I’m biased for both – but it does align with the year’s Thought for Humans theme of the fair. It has dealt with the idealistic observation of how humans interact with their furniture and the convenience that is desired from it.

The Carousel Chair by San Francisco-based Pagura with its straightforward triple-fold seat and three-plank backrest, stands on four strong legs that combine in pairs on either side right below the seat for additional durability. When you want to move, the Carousel Chair folds up flat to carry in a bag. The Slant stool shares the same fundamental DNA of the Carousel to serve and engage with us as active participants in our spaces.

Pagura’s idea was to create furniture that doesn’t just live passively but also fulfills our needs. So, the chair and stool in question do not have a limited potential, in fact, it has the potential to evolve without the restriction of space and location.

While you look around at different chairs, to see what’s next in furniture design, take a moment to relax and appreciate the efficacy and simplicity of the Carousel Chair that doesn’t have an exorbitant shape or proportion, but has the functionality to impress. It’s a chair designed for us!
