You’d hardly find someone who does not like drinking coffee but there is a big problem with enjoying a cup of joe. The plastic and aluminum capsules for coffee-making have created an adverse environmental impact. To counter that issue, Swiss retail giant Migros has launched an innovative single-serve consumer coffee brewing system that utilizes spheres of pre-ground, condensed coffee called Coffee Balls in its CoffeeB system.

Replacing traditional coffee capsules with coffee balls, the CoffeeB system provides an eco-friendly substitute to capsule-consuming systems that popular brands like Keurig and Nespresso use. The first of its kind, the Coffee Ball works completely without capsules and produces zero waste.

Migros claims that this system is “revolutionizing an industry plagued by colossal waste.” It also says that capsule-coffee drinkers generate 100,000 tons of waste worldwide, every year. While some pods are recyclable or biodegradable, most of them end up in landfills.

Dr. Caroline Siefarth, who led the five-year research and development process for CoffeeB, says, “The next generation of capsule coffee is here, and it comes without a capsule. After half a decade of research, we’ve created CoffeeB, which will revolutionize the way the world drinks single-serve coffee.”

This innovative system compresses the coffee balls into a tasteless and colorless seaweed-based layer to give the coffee structure and protect it from flavor loss. This thin protective layer doesn’t dissolve during brewing. It means that the coffee capsule is also fully compostable in dark, nutrient-rich organic matter.

The CoffeeB Globe coffee machine combines the skills of a fully-automated system with the benefits of a capsule machine. Resultantly, you get the best high-quality coffee at the touch of a button without having to worry about disposing of capsules.

The CoffeeB Globe machine is priced at $155, with these revolutionary coffee balls starting at around $5 for a nine-ball pack. Unfortunately, CoffeeB’s products are currently limited to Switzerland and France only.
