Avid Surfer Turns Box Truck Into Tiny House to Live Off-Grid on Californian Beach

Scot, an avid surfer, took his love for sun, sand, and sea one step ahead of others and how! Wanting to avoid the rent trap and stay close to the beach in Orange County, California, he passionately built his own off-grid tiny home on a box truck. Measuring 120 square feet, the dwelling he calls the “Beach House Box Truck” is well-equipped with everything needed while on the go.

To downsize and live better, Scot broke away from the city’s chaos and converted a 2002 GMC SL Isuzu box truck into his home. The inside of the truck makes space for a living room, kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom with plenty of multifunctional spaces and hidden storage options. Touted as an electric vehicle by the owner, it runs on six lithium batteries with 1600 watts of solar power and has a generator for emergency use.

The exterior of the mobile home looks pretty much the same until you notice an 18 ft movie screen with two guitar speakers on one side of the truck. Scot pairs the screen with a bright and powerful projector to watch movies with friends and family under a starry sky. At the rear is a storage door and under-bed space for storing the awning, surfboards, and a motorbike.

Upon entering through a door that swings inward, you can notice the dedicated space, well managed for his needs. To the right is the living area with a cushiony 7ft L-shaped couch that lifts up electrically and stores the home’s electrical system (batteries and more) within. The wall opposite it holds a large TV and also has an extendable dining table under it, which can double as a work desk.

The raised floor of the truck bed makes space for a hidden pantry. Adjacent to the sofa is the slide-out bed, again docked with underneath storage for clothes and footwear. The area is well lighted with reading lights above the bed. Opposite the bed is a small yet functional bathroom with a shower and Jabsco toilet which is a better option than an RV toilet since it helps to cut off the smell (but consumes relatively more water). Scot is quick to mention that his truck home has sufficient water storage for kitchen and bathroom use.

A compact kitchen makes space for a butcherblock top, induction cooktop, deep stainless-steel sink, and refrigerator. Covered storage for utensils and items below and above the countertop comes in handy. The wooden windows fold up for a perfect beach view, allowing sunlight and fresh air through.

Scot’s life journey in the truck tiny house is covered by Tiny House Giant Journey reporting that it is made at an all-inclusive cost of $65,000.
