Traditional laundry machines use a significant amount of water and energy to get the laundry done. At the same time, some of them involve shifting clothes from the washer to the dryer, which needs time and physical work. A Miami-based startup has come up with Eeva as a solution. This is a portable clothes washing machine that washes and dries the laundry in one go. There is only one drum in the machine so you get your clothes – clean and absolutely dry – straight from the machine.

Thanks to Eeva’s autonomous cycles, you never have to remember to switch your laundry from the washer to the dryer. You start by simply filling up the removable water canister with 2.5 gallons of water or connecting through a direct water supply. The clothes are first washed in the drum and then spun and heat dried, which means you get dry clothes without any moisture like from traditional laundry machines.

Eeva is about 2ft wide and 3.5ft tall and weighs about 50 lbs. The washing machine uses 0.3kwh per load and takes 90mins to complete a full wash and dry cycle. The laundry machine has a load capacity of 1.0 cu ft (28 l) and can accommodate around 7 lbs (3.17 kg) of laundry per cycle. The machine is shipped with 60 free loads of a special detergent that allows it to use less water. The company will also provide other alternatives, listed in its digital manual.

Given its size, dimensions, and rinse water reservoir (you can empty it later), the Eeva can be used in the closet, bedroom, or under a counter without an external vent. There is a built-in LCD screen that lets you choose the wash cycle and see the remaining time. You can choose from regular, delicate, or heavy-duty wash settings. As for the drying feature, you can opt between wash-only or dry-only cycles apart from the autonomous wash and dry cycle.

Despite using the machine daily, the startup claims Eeva conserves water, uses less energy, and produces less pollution than standard washers and dryers. The companion mobile app will provide the user with that information based on your actual consumption. The startup will also provide roller wheels to make it easy to transport.

The Eeva portable washing machine innovates the standard laundry mechanism. It is currently being crowd-funded on Indiegogo and you can pre-book one for $899 with estimated delivery in November 2023.
