When was the last time you saw a trailer manufacturer drop a camper that boasts of a semi-teardrop profile? There was a time when semi-teardrop trailers were found a dime a dozen. Whether it was an Australian company or an American corporation, everyone had the idea that if they were to unveil a trailer, it had to be teardrop or semi-teardrop in profile.

But over some time, trailer manufacturers across the globe have started making subtle changes to the core design of how a trailer should look and this has led to the rise of Squaredrop trailers, fifth-wheel trailers, pop-up campers, expandable trailers, tent trailers, and many other versions of camper trailers present in the market today. Challenging the trend of larger and fancy teardrop trailers, Columbus-based Hiker Trailers is introducing an entry-level model priced significantly lower than any new trailer in recent years.

Dubbed Highway Lite, the $4,999 trailer’s design is reminiscent of camper trailers that were popular in the mid-2010s. Boasting an all-aluminum frame, the camper trailer redefines camping convenience, making it an excellent choice for those with smaller tow vehicles. Irrespective of the old-school design, Highway Lite doesn’t compromise on space.

Measuring only 11.7 feet in length and over 3.8 feet in width, it sleeps two people inside its empty shell, that can later be equipped with the necessary interior structure for an organized camping experience, with the mattress sold separately. For now, the trailer features a blank canvas that can be customized with Hiker’s assistance or left as it is and modified over time.

While some may argue that it is quite basic and not as functional as other trailers in the market, but considering the price, Highway Lite is an instant eye-catcher for trailer enthusiasts. It is important to mention that for a trailer this cheap, some manufacturers would opt for completely open teardrop designs without a rear galley to reduce size and cost.

But Hiker Trailer does the opposite and retains essential galley features in the Highway Lite, including shelves and pass-through cubbies for easy access between the galley and cabin. Not to mention, a couple of upper cabinets in the bedroom section that can be used for storing essentials. To avail of other features, you can ask Hiker Trailer to customize Highway Lite or DIY one.

On the slight downside, the Highway Lite trailer isn’t meant for off-roading adventures. As evident by the name ‘Highway Lite’, Hiker Trailer’s latest version leans towards metalled roads. The ‘Lite’ designation signifies Hiker’s first all-aluminum square-tube chassis, which serves as the trailer’s foundation.

The lightweight design makes it towable by some of the smallest vehicles using a two-inch hitch receiver. Other features worth mentioning include a solid entry door, openable screened windows on each side, a 2,200-lb torsion axle, a manual roof vent, lights for the cabin and galley, stabilizer jacks, and a 110-V shore power plug.
