Unbeknownst to many people, concrete is an amazing material for creating small or big home décor items. This versatile and high-performance material has great strength and renders a wonderful texture to the final make. Décor items are fine, but have you ever considered making planters for your little saplings or succulents using concrete? Making a cute little planter is as easy as pouring concrete into a plastic bowl and squishing with another one on top of it. Don’t get confused, here is an easy DIY project for you to do over the weekend with detailed instructions and a video tutorial.

Material Needed:

  • Concrete
  • One big plastic bowl and one small plastic bowl
  • Cellophane wrap

First, wrap the bowls in cellophane inside out to prevent the concrete from sticking inside the vessels. You can simply wrap the inside of the bigger bowl and outside of the smaller bowl or cover them entirely. You can also go no-cellophane. However, the cellophane wrap creates a nice texture on the planter’s surface.

Then make a thick batter. It should be the consistency of pancake batter. If the mixture is too runny, add more concrete and if it is too dry, add a bit of water till you get the desired consistency.

Now make a small ball of aluminum foil to add at the bottom of the bowl to make the drainage hole. You can glue it to the bowl or let it be freestanding, but that might move its place once you pour the concrete.

Next, fill the bigger bowl to two-thirds with concrete mixture. Place the smaller bowl in the middle of the cement and push it down. You will need to fill the smaller bowl with pebbles or stones to keep it weighed down. This is necessary to create a vessel shape otherwise the smaller bowl will float up leaving you with a shallow container.

Now fill the sides to the brim and smoothen the edges.

Once dried, remove the planter from the bowls. This part might be a bit tricky but have patience and gently coerce the bowls out without damaging the planter. Peel off the cellophane wrap and you are left with a beautiful texture.
