There are lot of unique lamp designs elevating the aesthetics of the interiors but have you ever wondered that Allen keys could be the inspiration behind designing a pendant lamp? Well, that’s what IKEA has done. IKEA has introduced flatpack ODLEBLAD pendant luminaire that flaunts its unique but futuristic design, taking its design cues from the most famous, yet the most humble tools.
David Wahl, a designer at IKEA, wanted to pay homage to Allen keys. He wanted to exalt its status from a simple but a valuable tool to a classic sculpture that turns heads. Hence, he designed the ODLEBLAD pendant luminaire. Wahl mentioned, “The Allen key shape is brilliant, because with its specific form, we get precision-cut parts with minimal waste. The entire sphere is held together by its own geometry.” He firmly believes that the designing of a product should be done with minimal waste.
He came up with an exceptional idea of designing a pendant lamp shade that looks like a number of Allen keys interlocked with each other. This is what gives the ODLEBLAD pendant luminaire its classy look.
At first, he struggled to come up with a flatpack design that connects well with ease and requires no fitting, but then the vision materialized. The materials utilized in making of the lampshade are birch veneer, clear lacquer and PET plastic (minimum 50 percent recycled). When these blades of the lampshade are interlocked, they make up a sphere with a diameter of 48 cm.
There are a total of 60 blades, which look identical. To ease the assembling of the ODLEBLAD pendant luminaire, the light comes with five modules. Each module contains 12 pre-assembled parts and all you need to do is connect these modules with each other and form a 60-blade sphere. Even the assembling of the pieces together is quite satisfying, it won’t take much of your time and efforts. It will be like putting together a puzzle.

ODLEBLAD pendant luminaire looks artistic in itself but when light is switched on, it looks an astounding sculpture. The materials used in the pendant lamp shade are what give the light a touch of warmth.
Since the pendant lamp shade is suspend from the ceiling, it saves lot of space and makes the room look less cluttered. Imagine a pendant lamp that can be used not only for lighting but also as a well-crafted centerpiece. That is what IKEA has created with ODLEBLAD.
